The examination of sera from residents of the Society Islands in French Oceania for dengueneutralizing and hemagglutination-inhibition antibodies indicated that: 1) dengue 1 virus is the only type of dengue virus that has been active in the area in recent years, 2) infection with this virus had been very prevalent and widespread, and 3) the virus apparently disappeared after 1944 (when the last epidemic of the disease occurred).
