Summary

The current and proposed plan of development of the Damodar Valley Corporation, often referred to as India's T. V. A., is outlined. Malaria survey results are reported for the pre-development stage. Recommendations which were made toward malaria prevention in the vicinities of six artificial impoundments and in a million acre area to be irrigated are described. The malariogenic importance of the irrigation development is considered to be far greater than that of the reservoirs. Two conflicting opinions as to the measures which should be undertaken to curb “irrigation malaria” in this particular area, are presented, and a proposal for field research in anopheline ecology is described. The objectives of this research are to evaluate the potential problem and to provide a basis for developing appropriate counter-measures.
