To the Editor:

I am sending this letter to you because of what I understand to be a complication involving publication priority for our manuscript, entitled “Pathogenesis of Hantaan virus infection in suckling mice: Clinical, virologic and serologic observations” (Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg, 34: 338–395). Although I was aware of this paper's submission to and acceptance by The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, I submitted an earlier version of the same manuscript to a local Korean publication, The Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology. The paper was published in this journal in volume 20, pp. 115–125. I apologize for the controversy surrounding this action, but I was not aware that publishing the paper in the Korean scientific literature constituted a formal duplication, nor that it posed a problem in terms of publication priority.

I am sorry for any difficulties this may have caused.
