Basch Our three speakers are to be congratulated on their lucid presentations, which have so clearly described the schistosomiasis picture in their respective countries from ancient times to the present day. Together, Brazil, China, and Egypt embrace all three of the major schistosomes of mankind. They also represent three cultures and three political systems on three continents, but one common intention: to eliminate this disease as a menace to their population.

There is a striking analogy between these programs and the former malaria eradication programs throughout the world. The preparatory, attack, consolidation, and surveillance phases described have a very familiar ring, suggesting that approaches to control of diverse parasitic and vector-borne diseases have more in common than may at first be apparent.
