Discontinuous electrophoresis techniques were used for the analysis of bacterial isolates belonging to the genus Yersinia. Specific electrophoretic traits can be used to identify three species in the group: Y. enterocolitica, Y. pseudotuberculosis, and Y. pestis. The authors were unable to identify qualitative electrophoretic characters capable of differentiating Y. pestis from Y. pestoides, the commonly accepted subspecies of Y. pestis, or those capable of differentiating the serotype categories of Y. enterocolitica or Y. pseudotuberculosis.
