Everyone who has sufficient interest to read this review should obtain the January issue of the British Medical Bulletin (BMB). The issue provides the best overall perspective that I have seen on important recent advances and research trends in many of the major problems of the tropics, and it does so in a highly readable fashion. As with all issues of the BMB there is a strong British orientation, but the 20 contributors have a variety of backgrounds, represent a range of geographic experience and cover a diversity of disease entities.

Dr. C. E. Gordon Smith, Dean of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is the Scientific Editor for this issue. In the first chapter he provides insight into the changing patterns of disease brought about by the complex ecological interactions produced by the explosive population growth with accompanying urbanization and mass migrations and by the extensive environmental alterations related to agricultural and engineering developments.
