Electron Microscopic Observations on Material Obtained by a New Method

A method that utilized an agarose column was developed to isolate and concentrate gametocytes from the blood of patients infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that microgametocytes contained a larger and more varied array of cellular organelles than microgametocytes but that both types contained nuclei, free ribosomes, ribosomes attached to membrane-limited cisternae, pigment granules, and mitochondria.
