Original source: Isolated by Robert P. Scrivani at the School of Public Health, University of California, from a pool of 100 female adult Culicoides variipennis caught on 27 and 28 May 1964 in a Dry Ice-baited trap at Kern County, California, Lat. 35° 30′ N, Long. 119°W. Habitat: Semi-desert, saltbush vegetation bordering agricultural land. Storage: Specimen stored in sealed glass tube at -65°F until tested.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Ground suspension in 33% normal rabbit serum in Hanks's BSS. Inoculated 0.01 ml ic in 2- to 3-day-old mice, and also in primary hamster kidney-cell cultures on 10 March 1965. Tissue culture maintained with 0.5% lactalbumin hydrolysate in Earle's BSS with 3% calf serum and 4 mg glucose per ml. CPE shown.
Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated. No similar virus in laboratory.
