This voluminous work covers the entire field of laboratory aid to clinical medicine, including microscopy, urine analysis, blood chemistry, hematology, blood groups and transfusions, gastric analysis, puncture fluids, feces, special tests, clinical bacteriology, serology, postmortems, tissue cutting, preparation of museum specimens, toxicologic technic, crime detection, basal metabolism, electrocardiography, parasitology and tropical medicine, the last two topics comprising the third volume, which is an innovation with this edition. Several of the above sections have been prepared by collaborators who are duly credited at the heading of the contributed chapters. The wide scope of the work, and the encyclopediac detail, make the characterization of textbook, inappropriate.

This very breadth makes it practically impossible for a single person to adequately appraise the value of all of the sections. Under the circumstances the reviewer's interest was more particularly attracted to the third volume, parasitology and tropical medicine, which stresses the zoological aspects of parasitology at the expense of a consideration of clinical medicine, and limits the scope of tropical medicine to parasitic diseases.
