This is a collection of 14 lectures by Botreau-Roussel and his assistants at the École d'Application du Service de santé des Troupes Coloniales (Pharo). It is stated to be part of the instruction given to young medical officers in preparation for tropical service with the army. While the authors disclaim any attempt to produce an exhaustive study of surgical practice in the tropics, they have, nevertheless, covered very thoroughly the pathology and surgical treatment of the following diseases: malaria, filariasis and elephantiasis, amebic abscess, the dysenteries, tropical bubo, affections of the spermatic cord, ascaridiasis, urinary bilharziasis, staphylococcic infection, phagedenic ulcers, surgical aspects of brucellosis and yaws. The last chapter is an excellent discussion of bone and joint tuberculosis as seen in the African negro soldier.

This book is bound in paper but the illustrations are numerous and well chosen.
