The Theobald Smith Medal

The Theobald Smith Medal is the George Washington University Medal in Tropical Medicine. It is a gold medal, established in 1936 by the George Washington University of Washington, D. C., to be awarded through the American Academy of Tropical Medicine.

The face of the medal bears a replica of the bust of Theobald Smith, reproduced from the Harvard Plaque of Theobald Smith designed by the sculptor Bela Pratt. The reproduction was made with the official permission of Harvard University. The face of the medal also bears the inscription “Theobald Smith 1859–1934.” The reverse of the medal bears the inscription, “The George Washington University Medal in Tropical Medicine. Established 1936. Awarded to — in Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to Tropical Medicine,” with the year of award.

Bronze replicas of the medal have been deposited for permanent record with the United States Army Medical Museum and with the New York Numismatic Society.
