The American Society of Tropical Medicine has greatly honored me by electing me to the presidency. I deeply appreciate the honor but feel that as far as any service to the society is concerned, I am like the negro who was asked to change a ten dollar bill. He replied, “I can't do it boss, but thank you for the compliment.”

For the presidential address which custom decrees, I have chosen to take you on a tour through the history of tropical medicine, with special reference to the United States. Like other world tours, this one will make only a few stops at certain ports, and those of you who wish further information will have to leave the ship and make your own side trips. I hope that you will do so.
