At this informal discussion of the development of tropical medicine in the United States I have been asked to make a few remarks. While I have prepared what little I have to say in the form of these written notes, I do not wish to detract in this way from the informality of this discussion or to bore you with a formal paper. My observations are only of the most general nature, but I am sure that all of us are fundamentally interested in the development of this field of medicine and it is frequently stimulating to exchange ideas regarding subjects in which we are most interested. I am glad that Dr. O'Connor is also going to present a discussion on this subject for he and I have talked at great length during the past several years and I know he, as a veteran in the tropical field with wide experience in various parts of the world, has many interesting views to bring before us.
