Summary

Bephenium hydroxynaphthoate administered to children 10 to 15 years of age in total amounts of 4.0 to 17.5 grams (base) over a period of 1 to 7 days proved to be highly effective against Ancylostoma duodenale and Ascaris lumbricoides. It was less effective against Necator americanus and Trichuris trichiura. The side effects from the 5- and 7-day courses of therapy were of sufficient severity and frequency to limit the use of these therapeutic regimes in mass therapy. However, when a total of 5.0 grams of the base was given in two doses on 1 day, the side reactions were not significant or extensive and the Ancylostoma and Ascaris cure rates were excellent. This latter regime appears to be the most desirable one at present, although it is possible that further study may show that 1-day therapy with doses smaller than 5.0 grams is effective. Pharmacologic studies indicate that this drug is safe in therapeutic dosage.
