Mr. President and Members of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene:
The Walter Reed Medal Committee, composed of Dr. Sodeman, Dr. Taliaferro and myself, was pleased to nominate Dr. Karl F. Meyer for the 1956 award. The nomination was unanimously approved by the Council of the Society, and I as Chairman have the honor to present the medal to Dr. Meyer.
The Walter Reed Medal award was established by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and the first medals were conferred in 1936. This year we honor Dr. Meyer in compliance with the principal condition of award, namely, “in recognition of meritorious achievement in tropical medicine”.
Karl F. Meyer was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1884. He received the degrees of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Zurich in 1909 and 1924, respectively.Several honorary degrees,including Doctor of Medicine, have been conferred on him by institutions of higher learning in this country and abroad in acknowledgment of his widely known contributions to biological science and public health.
