The book Genetics of Insect Vectors of Disease, published nearly 30 years ago, compiled information on what was then a relatively new field of research. It also stimulated considerable interest in the possibility that ‘genetic manipulation’ could give rise to a new type of vector control technology. The Biology of Disease Vectors picks up where that story left off with a well written update on molecular and population aspects of arthropods that serve as transmitters of disease agents. Research efforts in this broad field of interest are expanding rapidly and there is a growing need to summarize findings. Barry Beaty and William Marquardt have responded by compiling a very useful review around the central theme of molecular biology and the study of insect vectors of disease.
The contributing authors represent an array of authorities in various aspects of medical entomology. There are reports by a number of younger investigators, an encouraging sign that medical entomology is still an attractive field.
