The inclusion of letters to the Editor as a part of the Journal's basic format has been frequently mentioned in the past. This issue has recently been reviewed with members of the Editorial Board. There are clearly some constraints that will have to be considered in the ultimate decision to include such material in the Journal. The first of these issues is one of expense. The pages devoted to letters to the Editor will not be covered by page charges and the Journal will have to absorb these costs. Therefore, brevity will be an important factor in publication. Letters should include references only as necessary.
The intent of a letters section will be to allow formal correspondence between and among members and readers of the Journal. Topics which may be of general interest to Society members, such as those dealing with tropical medicine, public health and hygiene, or recently published articles in the Journal, will be considered.
