This review reflects the efforts of the Indian Council of Medical Research to support studies of indigenous drugs over India and elsewhere. In 1939 the senior author published the results of Indian efforts supported by the Council. The present “telegraphic” exposé lists plants used in indigenous systems of therapy, as well as references to both Indian and Western sources. The ten chapters include poisonous plants as well as those “used as remedies.” Summaries of work done on commonly used drugs include one on “Rauwolfia serpentina” and its introduction into Western medicine.
