This 438-page text was designed to provide readers with a comprehensive view of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC), a contagious but self-limiting eye infection caused by enteroviruses, which first appeared in West Africa in 1969. The fifty authors, writing chapters on topics such as historic background, epidemiology, and clinical medicine, are to be congratulated for attempting to cover this disease in a systematic and thorough fashion.
The first half of this text was devoted to epidemiology, including 24 chapters describing outbreaks of AHC in different parts of the world. The second half of the text was divided among other topics.
Since AHC is a relatively new entity, it is understandable that heavy emphasis was placed on epidemiology. As commonly seen in multiauthor texts, there is a significant amount of overlapping among the 24 chapters on epidemiology. Basically, various epidemiologic features including age, sex, socioeconomic status and mode of transmission do not vary significantly from one area to another.
