Most parasitologic problems appear as intellectual emergencies and this book tells you how to solve them. Garcia and Bruckner's book is directed at students of medical technology and medicine and significant others, who share a common interest in knowing all they can, in order to arrive at diagnoses for individual patients. The standard presentation is introduction, life cycle and morphology, clinical disease, diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology and prevention. This is accompanied by a life cycle diagram, a photograph of the organisms' lesions, algorithms, and references. Some chapters have special sections and tables. Special problems are identified by notes; for example, the text explains how to avoid contaminating the centrifuge with cryptosporidium; that compromised patients should always be suspected of having strongyloidiasis; and that there is a danger of missing light malaria and Babesia infections when using automated differential instruments.
Unusual parasitic infections, such as microsporidia, micronema, pentastomids, and acanthocephala, are described so they can be identified or excluded.
