During the last 4 days, we have immersed ourselves in a wide range of detailed laboratory investigations concerning parasites and viruses and the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the diseases caused by them. Now, at this point in the meeting, it may be useful to step back and look at how our activities fit into the big picture of priorities on the international health scene.
This is the 12th annual Soper Lecture, which commemorates the memory of one of America's great workers in the field of tropical public health, Dr. Fred Soper. This lectureship, presented at these meetings of our Society, was initiated and is funded by the Gorgas Memorial Institute.
Before introducing this year's lecturer, Dr. William Foege, it is proper to make a few comments as to why Soper has been honored in this way. Newcomers and younger members of the Society may not know of him.
