Entamoeba histolytica with its accompanying bacterial flora was cultured in vitro in a basal medium of inorganic salts and egg albumin plus rice starch, to which was added a variety of aliphatic amines and amino alcohols. In general, other simple substrates, including glucose and other alcohols, carboxylic acids, and certain amino acids failed to support the growth of the amebae.
