This book is the first volume in a two-volume set on the immunodiagnosis of parasitic diseases. Volume 2 will be a similar presentation for protozoan diseases. The diseases chosen are those for which immunodiagnostic methods have been developed to improve the diagnosis in infections where either the conventional parasitological diagnosis is insensitive in light infections, or where the parasites are not directly demonstrable without surgical or other invasive procedures. Those included are: 1) schistosomiasis; 2) fascioliasis, paragonimiasis, clonorchiasis, and opisthorchiasis; 3) echinococcosis; 4) cysticercosis; 5) trichinosis; 6) strongyloidiasis; 7) toxocariasis; 8) filariasis; and 9) onchocerciasis.
Most chapters begin with several pages of introductory material encompassing such topics as the nature of the parasite involved and the disease it causes, and its world distribution and epidemiology. This is followed by short discussions of such nonimmunologic diagnostic methods as demonstrating various egg, larval, or adult forms of the parasite in various body tissues or fluids, for identifying and characterizing mass lesions in internal organs associated with some helminthic infections, or other methods.
