Prevention and Control of Yellow Fever in Africa

by the World Health Organization. vii + 97 pages, illustrated. World Health Organization, 1211 Geneva 27, Switzerland. 1986. Sw. fr. 17

This is a well prepared report concerned, as the title indicates, with the disease in Africa although parallels with the situation in the Americas are drawn when appropriate. This 1986 publication is based on the proceedings of a WHO-sponsored meeting held at Dakar 3 years ago.

In the preface the reader learns that it is intended to provide “… guidance for diagnosis, surveillance, management of cases and epidemics, and prevention of disease.” While aimed for workers in Africa, this booklet will be of value to anyone seeking concise, organized information on this important disease.

In the preface one also may learn that: “It is now possible, therefore, to present a complete picture of the transmission of yellow fever in Africa.” (It is assumed that this was added by a well meaning, nonscientific “dust cover” writer since the statement is not supported in the text.)
