If for professional reasons I were to travel to areas of the world where sickle cell disease is prevalent, I would certainly take with me this new book by Dr. Serjeant. The volume is well organized and well indexed. It is replete with current information about the subject matter and tables complement the text. Also, there is a valuable set of references.
The first six chapters are devoted to the fundamentals of knowledge about sickle cell disease, including the genetics and molecular biology of the disease, its association with other hemoglobinopathies, and the pathophysiology. These presentations are accurate and timely, and are quite suitable for students or others not familiar with current thought about this disease. Chapter six is a brief, concise history of the development of our knowledge of sickle cell disease.
