This is an excellent introductory text on infectious diseases. It is concise, very clearly written and arranged in a logical order of progression. It strikes me as being intended for the primary care resident, although the primary care physician and the senior medical student should both find it a useful text. It is not encyclopedic and is meant to be read. It does have a good index and will serve as a reference text. The illustrations are good and there are many excellent tables that help summarize information as well as put it into a broader context. There are also a number of flow charts that seem well thought out and deserve special mention.
It is a North American text. The representation of infections and the emphasis on each reflects the importance that the infection has in the practice of infectious disease treatment in the United States.
