Schistosomiasis: The St. Lucia Project is an account of work carried out by staff and visiting workers at the Research and Control Department of the Ministry of Health in St. Lucia between 1966 and 1981. Although most of the work has been described in about 150 published papers, this volume attempts to bring them together and to emphasize the continuity of the longitudinal studies.
The book is in two sections: the first deals with the different approaches to control of schistosomiasis; the second section describes other related investigations that invariably had a bearing on the control activities. In the first section there are subsections on chemotherapy in control, control of the intermediate snail host, and environmental control of transmission. The first section ends with an excellent subsection on comparison of control strategies, especially of comparative costs. The author indicates that the provision of water supplies was the most costly control program, although the operational cost (i.e., cost of maintaining the system—$2.99 per person) was less than for the areawide snail control.
