In the preface of this book the editors (and Coordinating Editor C. F. Chapman) state that a panel of the Association of American Medical Colleges “recommends limiting the amount of factual data the students are expected to commit to memory and replacing such data with information.” Therefore, the editors have “cut down on the content of the book by eliminating historical or tangential materials” while “emphasizing the information needed for the effective treatment of patients with virological diseases.” It cannot be the place of a book review to argue, pro or con, such a position. However, the effects of this philosophy are obvious here. Virology in Medicine contains superb chapters, a glossary and an index.
