Volume 1 of this two-volume treatise is an assemblage of self-contained chapters outlining the production, characterization and use of monoclonal antibodies against different species of bacteria. In contrast to most other texts of this nature, each of the contributors has adhered to a uniform scheme of presentation which includes an Introduction, Background, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Prospects, Summary and a complete list of References. This format allows easy retrieval of information which may be of specific interest to the reader.
The first eight chapters deal with the generation and characterization of monoclonal antibodies to specific bacteria: Gonococci, Group B Streptococci, Mycobacteria, Bacteroides, Legionella, Shigella, Vibrio and Tetanus. Methods used for cell fusion and for screening of hybridomas are, for the most part, standard. Nevertheless, an abundance of new data describing the use of monoclonal antibodies as reagents in taxonomic analyses (e.g., Mycobacteria and Legionella) and as diagnostic probes makes the text a worthy purchase.
