This book represents the proceedings of an International Symposium on Bluetongue and Related Orbiviruses held at Asilomar, California, 16–20 January 1984. The symposium brought together for the first time scientists and regulatory officials from the many countries impacted by the emergence of bluetongue and related viruses as economically important pathogens and as factors inhibiting the international movement of livestock and germplasm. The symposium, chaired by Dr. B. I. Osburn, University of California, Davis, was timely—recent advances made in our understanding of the orbiviruses and of the biology and epidemiology of orbivirus diseases meant that a large amount of new information was exchanged. The symposium provided comprehensive coverage of all appropriate themes, including basic virology, immunology, pathology and pathogenesis, epidemiology, entomology, vaccinology and control strategies.
Overall, the book reflects very well the scope and scale of the symposium—it is very international in outlook, with proper emphasis placed upon the impact of these viruses on livestock agriculture of developed countries.
