For the first time in the history of Progress in Allergy the subject of immunity and immune mechanisms in infectious diseases is reviewed. As with previous volumes of this series this collection of six review articles represents a concise, yet complete, overview of an extremely broad area of immunology. Although specific infectious diseases are dealt with in the book, the primary focus is generally on mechanisms of immunity rather than a definitive review of immunity in a particular infection.

The volume begins with a comprehensive overview of immune mechanisms in host-parasite relationships. Both humoral and cellular effector mechanisms are reviewed as well as mechanisms of immune evasion. The second review considers mucosal immunity in parasitic infections. The work focuses on the broad range of immune factors found at mucosal sites which lead to susceptibility, resistance, or adaptability of a host to an infection. The production and activities of IgE in helminth infection are reviewed in the third article.
