This festschrift contains 16 papers presented in four symposia convened to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the McMaster Laboratory of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Sydney, Australia. The symposia, now the major subdivisions of the book, were entitled āBiology of Parasites,ā āEpidemiology and Control,ā āPathophysiology,ā and āImmunology.ā Each ends with a brief, critical summary by the appropriate section chairman (R. I. Sommerville, W. H. Southcott, L. E. A. Symons and A. K. Lascelles, respectively).
The papers range from a general, theoretical study of the role of anaerobiosis in the biochemical evolution of parasites to a specific, highly factual account of the control of livestock parasites in Australia. Papers of most interest to readers of this journal include: 1) āThe Infective Stage and the Development of Nematodesā (W. P. Rogers and T. Petronijevic), which reviews experimental evidence supporting the theory that the stage-to-stage development in nematodes is regulated by the serial activation of stage-specific gene sets.
