Until the last few years, the sexually transmitted diseases were considered to be syphilis, gonorrhea, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, granuloma inguinale, and nongonococcal urethritis. These, it was tacitly assumed, were acquired in the conventional manner. This book is designed to inform the primary health care provider about the many sexually related and transmitted diseases (STDs) seen in the homosexual population. To this end, 15 contributors, all with wide experience in health problems of gay men, review these conditions.
A chapter on sexual practices history-taking provides the practitioner with insight into this neglected area, and tabulates the relationship between various STDs and specific sexual practices. An overview of STD diagnosis is found in a chapter rather misleadingly entitled “Setting up the Physician's Office ….” The next several chapters discuss diagnosis and treatment of syphilis, gonorrhea, nongonococcal urethritis, amebiasis, giardiasis, shigellosis, and viral hepatitis, emphasizing epidemiologic features important or unique to the homosexual lifestyle.
