This 100-page volume, sparingly but effectively illustrated, provides an excellent basic overview of tuberculosis for medical students; for the physician who is not an expert in the field but wishes to update his knowledge; and for nursing and laboratory personnel also. As indicated by the author in the Preface, “This book is directed toward the medical reader both in developed and developing countries,” and should be equally valuable to both.
The 17 chapters discuss in sequence the natural history of tuberculosis in the individual, both in the child and in the adult; the clinical manifestations of the various types of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary disease manifestations (miliary, meningitis lymphadenitis, genitourinary, etc.); the conditions predisposing to tuberculosis; the factors which influence prognosis in the various clinical types of tuberculosis; diagnostic procedures, including the tuberculin test, chest X-ray and bacteriology; and currently recommended treatment regimens. There follows a chapter on the natural history of tuberculosis in the community.
