Recording and classifying diseases are very old endeavors. However, it was not until the nineteenth century that morbidity and mortality data were regularly recorded in many parts of the world. The need to make the content of such record systems consistent for the purposes of statistical comparisons eventually led to the adoption of the International Classification of Diseases, now in its ninth edition.
The predecessors of the ICHPPC-2 Defined essentially were adaptations of the International Classification of Diseases, written for the general, family and primary care practitioner. This new edition is similar in that it mainly focuses on problems encountered in primary care. An added feature, however, is the inclusion of a helpful section of definitions.
The previous editions of this book served a useful purpose in that their widespread use in the field rapidly uncovered areas of deficiency. The present volume has been revised to deal with these problems and to ensure the highest possible level of statistical comparability.
