This text is designed to provide a brief summary of some of the more common dermatologic diseases and conditions for the physician who is not a dermatologist, and for medical students. At the outset, an outline is provided of an approach to dermatologic diagnosis. This includes a detailed description of the characteristics of skin lesions which can provide the information needed for accurate diagnosis. The individual diseases are presented with a very brief summary of the epidemiology, history, physical findings, differential diagnosis and laboratory findings. A brief mention of disease course and treatment is also included. A brief illustrative case history and uniformly excellent color illustration of the clinical findings are presented. Several appendices which cover pathogenesis of skin diseases, types of skin lesions, clinical and laboratory aids to diagnosis, skin types, dermatomes and daily doses of antibiotics follow. An overly detailed appendix on malignant melanoma is also included.
