This book is the culmination of efforts by the editors to bring together all of the available information about California (CAL) serogroup viruses, and is a direct product of a conference held in conjunction with the ASTMH meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, in November 1982. The rapidity with which editors, participants, and publishers were able to make this wealth of knowledge available (symposium to publication was 6 months) is a credit to these individuals and a reflection of the current level of interest in these viruses.

The tone of the entire book is set by Dr. Calisher with his concise review of the taxonomy, classification and distribution of the 14 viruses recognized in this serogroup. He points out that La Crosse (LAC) virus “… is an important human pathogen of man and is the raison d'etre of the Symposium.”
