This is the second publication in a projected Tropical Medicine Research Study Series. Much of the work included in the publication was carried out in Mexico, at the Center for the Study of Amebiasis.
Chapter one presents a brief review of both the historical aspects and current situation, and the author's reason for writing the monograph.
The second chapter, Cell Biology, is primarily concerned with the morphology of Entamoeba histolytica, and constitutes approximately half of the entire book. Included in studies on morphology are cell form and motility of the trophozoite, details of the cytoplasm and cell surface of the trophozoite, and features of the nucleus and cyst. Using whole organisms as well as sectioned or freeze-fractured specimens, morphological details are presented in an excellent series of micrographs at magnifications ranging from 1,000 to 150,000. Among the details illustrated are filopodia, chromatoid bodies, rhabdovirus-like particles, the plasma membrane, the nuclear membrane, and the endosome.
