INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS BARNETT L. CLINE It is my pleasure to welcome the audience and the distinguished invited participants in this Symposium. Our three principle speakers have traveled great distances to be with us, and I extend to them a warm welcome on behalf of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

With regard to program format, during the first half of the Symposium we will hear about the schistosomiasis control programs in Brazil and Egypt. Following a 20-minute break the report from the People's Republic of China will be presented and then a panel of three discussants will help us refocus on the major issues presented in the country reports.
