Summary

  1. 1.The intestinal contents of 1128 fish, combined into 376 pools, were cultured for the presence of human enteric pathogens. Shigella or Salmonella organisms were recovered from 44, or 11.1 per cent, of the pools.
  2. 2.Thirty-four strains of Shigella and 13 of Salmonella were found. S. typhi, S. dysenteriae 2 and S. sonnei were the organisms most commonly encountered.
