Antigenic group: California.

Original source: Isolated by W. Burgdorfer et al.1 at Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana from blood of emaciated sluggish adult Lepus americanus (snowshoe hare), trapped alive in August 1959 at Bitterroot Valley, Montana, USA, Lat. 46°N,Long. 114°W. Habitat: Canyon in Bitterroot National Forest. Storage: Stored immediately at -70°C until inoculated.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Blood diluted in 50% rabbit serum saline. Inoculated 0.02 ml ip into 3-day-old mice.

Validity of isolation: Reisolation not tried but original source showed both neutralizing and CF antibody to virus isolate.
