This monograph, consisting of 20 papers by J. Vesenjak-Hirjan and her associates, is a study in detail of the infection and disease caused by the Central European tick-borne encephalitis (CETBE) virus in a small section of the very large area in which the virus is active.
The disease was first specifically diagnosed in Croatia in 1953. In subsequent years, and under the leadership of Dr. Vesenjak, clinical, serological, virological, epidemiological, and ecological studies were carried out by at least 17 specialists in 11 institutions; the studies cover the period between 1961 and 1974.
Due to the enormous bibliography that exists on the subject of CETBE, accumulated over the last 30 or 40 years, little new could be expected in the area surveyed; the monograph will be of interest mainly to the specialized reader.
The monograph gives valuable information on prevalence, clinical types and severity of the disease; over a period of 10 years, from 1964 to 1973, about 800 cases were specifically diagnosedāmainly by serologyāwith only one death.
