The Fourth Edition of Basic Clinical Parasitology retains the format and size of the previous edition by Brown (1969). Primarily intended for “medical students and busy physicians,” it provides that audience and others with a clear, concise and current summary of the medical aspects of parasitologic diseases. Since the previous edition, information on diagnostic tests and therapy has been updated, a discussion of anisakiasis has been added, and the section on Capillaria philippinensis has been enlarged slightly.
Key concepts relating to parasitism are defined clearly in the first chapter. Life cycles of parasites are outlined very effectively by using small photographs of parasites, patients and associated pathology. The Chapters on Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases and Technical Diagnostic Methods are excellent summaries of relevant, practical details in which newer knowledge is also incorporated. Pros and cons of various unsettled or risky diagnostic and therapeutic measures are presented in balanced fashion throughout the book, as are several examples of diagnostic coups by interns and medical students who remembered to think of parasitologic possibilities.
