This volume is a detailed presentation of the International Symposium on Smallpox Vaccine held at the Rijks Instituut Voor de Volksgezondheid in Bilthoven, the Netherlands from October 11 through October 13, 1972. The symposium is organized into seven different sections, three of which deal directly with diverse aspects of smallpox vaccines and three with areas related to smallpox vaccines. A final section dealt with the symposium's conclusions and recommendations. The sections presented in this volume are: Section I, Immunity and Smallpox Eradication; Section II, Production of Smallpox Vaccine; Section III, Laboratory Testing of Smallpox Vaccine; Section IV, Field Studies; Section V, Complications Following Vaccination; Section VI, Vaccine Development Especially Pertaining to the Prevention of Complications and Section VII, General Conclusions and Recommendations.

Section I contains two papers which present a concise then up-to-date view of world wide smallpox incidence and world eradication efforts.
