The interaction and subsequent transformation of Leishmania donovani within viable in vitro cell culture preparations were investigated using the electron microscope. Observed ultrastructural changes of the parasite during its transformation process corresponded with results reported by previous investigators. In the interaction of the parasite with hamster peritoneal macrophages, some of the parasites appeared to be degraded within vacuoles of the macrophage, whereas they appeared to be able to survive within similar vacuoles of the dog sarcoma 503 cell line.
