This small book provides a brief but quite comprehensive guide for the establishment and operation of Nutritional Rehabilitation or Mothercraft Centers in communities with a high prevalence of malnutrition in children under 5. The basic goal of such centers is “educating mothers in child care by involving them in the nutritional rehabilitation of their own children, using foods, facilities and methods that are within their financial means and their ability to comprehend.” Each center is of a size to accommodate from 25 to 30 children and 5 to 6 mothers at a time. Children are selected whose degree of malnutrition is equivalent to grade II or III in the Gómez classification, and if the malnutrition is uncomplicated, such children will recuperate after 2 to 3 months of attendance, 6 days a week, at such a center.
Each center uses a least-cost menu for the children based upon availabilities and prices in that community and these local foods are prepared in a way that can be used in the child's home.
