This 240-page tome falls somewhere between a symposium on current status of research, and a primer on the pathology and clinical laboratory features of a highly selected group of infectious diseases, endemic largely to Latin America. Aside from three introductory chapters reviewing the history and concept of “Immunopathology,” the chapters deal successively with fungal disease, cutaneous and visceral Leishmaniasis, hydatid disease, leprosy, yaws and pinta, Manson's schistosomiasis, Chagas' disease, sleeping sickness, cysticercosis, intestinal protozoal infection, bartonellosis, tropical arbovirus infection, strongyloidiasis, and oncocerciasis. Each author or group of authors review their own experience as well as the literature, without any over-all systematization or uniformity of approach; thus, each chapter reflects a different personality and view, and in many instances reveals a wealth of laboratory or research experience otherwise unobtainable in the literature; in addition, many chapters include a bibliography rich in Portuguese and Spanish language contributions that are not easily accessible elsewhere, and deserve wider attention than they have received here in the past.
