Clinical and laboratory studies of 61 patients with schistosomiasis and 21 patients without schistosomiasis, with infection with enteric organisms, principally S. paratyphi A, have revealed that this infection complicated by schistosomiasis with hepatic fibrosis has a characteristic picture, which is different from that of classic enteric infection in patients without schistosomiasis. The characteristic clinical features of the former syndrome are reported in detail and are interpreted. The concept that enteric infection in patients with schistosomiasis is essentially a urinary-tract infection is strengthened by this study.
