Kaisodi virus was initially isolated in 1957 from ticks, Haemaphysalis spinigera, collected in the Kyasanur Forest disease area of Shimoga District, Mysore State, India. Twenty-eight additional strains were recovered from H. spinigera in the same area from 1960 through 1964. No positive information on vertebrate host involvement has been obtained.

The Virus Research Centre is jointly maintained by the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Rockefeller Foundation. The Centre also receives a grant (3x4307) of PL 480 funds from the National Institutes of Health, USPHS, through the Indian Council of Medical Research.
