Serological and immunological evidence is reported which confirms identifications by Reiss-Gutfreund of three rickettsial isolates which she reported from Ethiopia. The first two proved to be isolates of Rickettsia prowazekii and R. typhi from Hyalomma ticks off cattle, an important observation; the third was a murine isolate from body lice off a hospitalized case of “typhus” during an outbreak in the vicinity of Addis Ababa. It is pointed out that the last still does not necessarily confirm that lice can act as vectors of murine typhus.
